A Moreh Hora’ah, always available

Bais Hora’ah of Lakewood exists so that a sh’aila can be answered when it comes up, by someone qualified to answer it.

Sh’ailos do not keep office hours. They come up in the kitchen, in the store, at work, and on Erev Yom Tov when there is no time to wait. Bais Hora’ah keeps a line answered from nine in the morning until ten at night, staffed by a Moreh Hora’ah, so that no one has to guess or put the question off.

Thirty local rabbonim are directly involved, alongside thirty-five kollel yungeleit. Together they answer roughly ten thousand sh’ailos a month, and as many as fifteen thousand in the weeks around Yom Tov.

A communal obligation

“Rav Moshe Feinstein always kept a phone on his desk because he held that a city must always have a Moreh hora’ah available. Therefore, it is incumbent upon Lakewood to support Bais Hora’ah because it’s the only place with a Moreh hora’ah always available.”

Rav Simcha Bunim CohenMara D’Asra, K’hal Ateres Yeshaya

“The Mishna Berurah rules that if a community has limited funds, hiring a Moreh hora’ah takes precedence over a shliach tzibur, even if they will thereby not fulfill the mitzvah of tefillah. He adds that no one can be exempt by saying they do not need a Rav, since it’s a communal obligation. It is thus a chiyuv upon everyone to support Bais Hora’ah so we can have such a place.”
